It is anticipated that during construction, Highway 401 will continue to operate with 3 through-lanes in each direction during most times of heaviest traffic. Lane reductions to carry out some works on Highway 401 will be required but will be limited to appropriate times during the day/week.
Specific construction details will be developed during later phases of detail design.
Sample Contract Breakdown/ Sequencing
- The ministry is currently considering a phased approach to start construction as early as possible
- Within a contract, the design build contractor will determine optimal staging to minimize project costs and impacts to the travelling public while conforming to requirements set by MTO
- Timing of implementation will depend on several factors including acquiring property, relocation of utilities, environmental permits and approvals and available funding
